What is the Swine Flu?
Swine flu virus, a respiratory disease, occurs in pigs which doesn’t normally affect humans, only sporadic occurrences where there may have been direct exposure to the infected pigs. The latest strain of Swine Flu, a type A influenza, is a mutated form from pigs which has passed along the way to humans. It is like a normal flu which is transmitted by human to human contact.
How can you know if you have the H1N1 swine flu virus?
It is not easy to tell the symptoms because is similar to regular kinds of the seasonal flu where you can have a fever, coughing and lack of appetite. Some other symptoms reported can include a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
What to do if you suspect you have the swine flu?
Follow the same treatment as you would if it was a regular flu, by not rushing to the emergency room in a hospital. If the symptoms are mild then stay at home, rest and fight the flu the way you normally would do. If it gets worse, then call your family doctor or medical center and arrange for an examination away from other patients.
What is the best way to avoid the H1N1 swine flu?
The swine flu spreads similar to any other flu by sneezing and coughing and through hands where an object with the flu virus and then touching your mouth or nose. The best defense is to practice good hygiene. Washing hands often in warm water for a minimum 20 seconds and cover your nose or mouth when sneezing or coughing.
Is a face mask helpful in protecting against the swine flu?
Health officials have indicated that face masks aren’t necessary and the best way to prevent swine flu is through frequent hand washing, avoiding crowded areas or close contact with anyone who might have the illness, and to cough or sneeze in your sleeve. A face mask might help to reduce the risk but it won’t provide complete protection. A face mask should only be used in a crowded setting in helping to reduce sneezing and coughing on others and to also protect your mouth and nose from other people’s sneezes or coughs.
Can the swine flu be transmitted by eating pork products?
You cannot get the swine flu virus from eating pork or pork products as viruses and bacteria are killed when cooked to a temperature internally of 160°F. Pork products are safe to eat when properly cooked just as any other food product that is in your refrigerator.
Many illnesses can be prevented by staying healthy and keeping your immune system strong through a healthier diet, regular exercise and getting sufficient sleep.
